Ubisoft yet again courts controversy over game ownership.
My thoughts on game ownership and should we be purchasing games made by Ubisoft.
Ubisoft caused concern with gamers in March 2024 when they had taken a game called The Crew offline making the game unplayable due to its online requirements, now this game is around 10 or so years old and there is a successor but from my research on it and reading an article from Ed Nightingale on Eurogamer. I thought I would share my thoughts.
Ubisoft has stated that players purchased “limited licence to access the game” as opposed to “unfettered ownership”. They tabled a motion to dismiss this case, this in my opinion is a disgrace when you are expected to hand over £70 the equivalent depending on your currency you expect to own that not lease it. If this is Ubisoft’s plan to get more people to subscribe to Ubisoft + then they may need to rethink that strategy, especially when the bulk of the games they release now are buggy messes, you would also think that the higher ups would be looking at the fact they have lost 1 billion in net worth according to the stock market and this was before the Tariffs.
I think for me this is the final nail in the coffin for me supporting Ubisoft I can’t justify purchasing or playing the games they now release, I hope the talented developers they have can go onto better companies.
I would love to read your thoughts on this matter.
